PREFACE

The present Volume contains all the entries in the earliest six Books of the Registers of the Parish Church of S. Oswald, Methley, extending from the year 1560 to the year 1812.

The first Book consists of 102 parchment leaves measuring 11½ x 10 inches; the second Book has 37 parchment leaves, 15⅜ x 8½ inches; the third Book has 69 parchment leaves, 12¾ x 11 inches, 4 being unused ; the fourth Book is of paper of the ordinary folio size, and contains the usual entries of Marriages, partly printed and partly written ; the fifth Book contains 60 parchment leaves, 12¾ x 10⅝ inches; and the sixth Book has about 97 parchment leaves, 15½ x 13½ inches, of which only 4 are written upon.

The Rector of Methley, the Rev. H. Armstrong Hall, B.D., has very kindly added the many valuable and interesting notes to the Registers, to which his initials are attached, also a series of notes on the Rectors, the result of much research. The thanks of the Society are due to Mr. Hall for permission to print the Registers and for the interest he has taken in the work, and the Editor desires to acknowledge the courteous and willing manner in which Mr. Hall has given facilities for copying the Registers and checking the printed proofs with the original MSS.

The thanks of the Society are also due to the Misses Denison for kindly undertaking the laborious work of compiling the Indices.
