JENKYNS, Andrea (born 1974) Conservative. Music teacher and business manager.
After teaching music in three secondary schools, she went into business management in the private sector working for several multi-national companies. For some time she acted as a retail store manager at the White Rose Centre as well as in Leeds, Guiseley and Wakefield. She entered politics as a Conservative councillor for Boston North West on Lincolnshire County Council, defeating a BNP candidate and then in 2015 she was selected to stand for Morley & Outwood in the forthcoming general election. In a struggle against five other candidates, she brought off one of the major shocks of the election by unseating the sitting Labour MP, Ed. Balls albeit by a narrow 422 vote majority. She thus became the first Conservative woman MP for a Leeds constituency. She has served on various Parliamentary committees including chairing the All Party Parliamentary Group on Local Democracy, the All Party Parliamentary Group on Patient Safety and the All Party Parliamentary Group on Town Centres and High Streets. She has occasionally voted against the party line notably on requiring pub companies to offer pub landlords rent-only leases and on more powers being given to local councils.
