1880 - 8th May - by-election

H. J. Gladstone (Liberal) returned unopposed

With such a significant Liberal victory in the town the previous month, Herbert Gladstone was returned unopposed with the Conservatives accepting the inevitable. The mayor made the official announcement to a large crowd gathered outside the Town Hall. James Kitson, President of the Leeds Liberal Association remarked it was a coincidence that W. E. Gladstone had also been returned unopposed for Midlothian on the same day. The Press Association carried reports that Herbert Gladstone would be made one of his father’s private secretaries but without salary.
